How to make an animated route map video

The animated line crawling across a map is one of the most recognisable devices in travel video, and one of the easiest to do badly. The difference between the version that carries a film and the version that looks like a corporate explainer comes down to three or four specific choices.

What the map is actually for

A route map animation has one job: make distance and direction legible without narration. If a viewer can tell that the second leg was much longer than the first, or that the trip doubled back on itself, the animation is working.

It is not decoration and it is not a transition effect. When people treat it as either, they end up with a map that moves at a constant speed regardless of distance, which conveys nothing and costs screen time.

The three styles, and when each one works

Line draw. The camera holds a fixed frame and a line traces the route across it. Best for showing an entire trip at once — a country loop, a multi-country rail journey. It is the only style that gives the viewer the complete shape in a single image, which makes it the natural choice for an opening or closing shot.

Vehicle follow. A marker — car, plane, dot — travels the route and the camera tracks it. Best for road trips, where the travelling is part of the story. It puts the viewer in motion rather than showing them a diagram.

Camera flyover. The camera moves between locations without drawing a persistent line, usually zooming out to travel and back in to arrive. Best for trips with long gaps between stops, where a drawn line would spend most of its time crossing empty ocean or desert.

Mixing styles within one film is usually a mistake. Pick one and let it establish a grammar the viewer can follow.

Zoom is a narrative decision

The instinct is to keep everything at a single comfortable zoom. Resist it — zoom level is how you tell the viewer what scale of movement is happening.

A useful pattern: zoom out proportionally to leg length. A short hop between neighbouring towns barely changes altitude. A flight between continents pulls all the way back to see both. When the camera height tracks distance, the viewer reads scale automatically.

The arrival zoom matters too. Coming to rest tight enough to see street layout tells the viewer they have arrived somewhere specific; stopping at country level tells them nothing and wastes the moment.

Map styling: subtract until the route is the brightest thing

Default map styles are designed for navigation, which means they are dense with information you do not need — every road classification, every minor label, terrain shading, points of interest. In a video, all of it competes with your route line.

Strip it back. Kill the point-of-interest markers. Drop road detail to major arteries or remove it entirely. Desaturate the base map so the route line is the only saturated element in frame. Keep water and coastlines, because they are what let people recognise where they are at a glance.

Dark base maps with a bright route line are popular for a reason: the contrast is high and the map recedes without disappearing. Light styles work too, but need the route line to be genuinely bold or it vanishes.

Timing the draw

A route line that draws at constant pixels-per-second will misrepresent your trip, because zoom changes mean equal screen distance covers wildly unequal real distance. If the film zooms out for a long leg, a constant screen speed makes that leg feel faster than a short one.

Timing on real-world distance instead — so kilometres per second stays roughly constant — is more honest and more legible. Perfect proportionality is not the goal either; a 3,000-kilometre leg does not need thirty times the screen time of a 100-kilometre one. Compressing long legs on a curve, so they still read as longer without dominating, is the practical middle ground.

As a starting point: two to four seconds for a typical leg, scaled up to a maximum of about eight for the longest one in the trip.

Labels: fewer than you think

Every stop wants a name on screen and this is where route animations get cluttered fast. Label the stop that is currently active and let the others sit unlabelled, or drop to smaller dots.

Animate labels in as the camera settles, not while it is moving — text sliding across a moving map is hard to read and looks unstable. Give the name a beat of stillness before the photos for that place come up.

Producing one without building it by hand

Doing this manually means either keyframing a camera in After Effects over a map image, or writing code against a mapping library and rendering frames. Both work and both take a while.

Common questions

What map data can I legally use in a video I publish?

OpenStreetMap data is open under the Open Database License and requires attribution. Commercial map providers each have their own terms — some permit video use with attribution, some restrict it. Check the specific provider's terms before publishing a monetised video, particularly if you screen-recorded their interface.

How long should the map animation be relative to the photos?

The map should be roughly a quarter to a third of total runtime. Beyond that it starts to feel like a logistics briefing. The photos are what people came for; the map is what makes them cohere.

Should the route line stay on screen after it is drawn?

Usually yes — a persistent line lets the viewer see the trip accumulating, which is most of the satisfaction of the device. Fade completed legs slightly so the active one stays dominant.
